There are several reasons why baby ear piercings are attractive. Needless to say, it looks lovely. Second, you'll spare your child the pain of potentially greater trauma when they're older, and erase the entire experience before the child remembers. But there is one thing to consider before youappointment piercingThere is a risk of allergy. Therefore, hypoallergenic safe baby earrings are a good choice. Designed to contain little or no metals that could cause an allergic reaction, your child may be less likely to experience an allergic reaction and their skin will be protected by the back earring protector.
But before you start shopping for the best hypoallergenic baby safety back earrings, it's important to understand which metals can cause reactions and what to look for in hypoallergenic earrings.
Are baby ear piercings safe?
Learn from dermatologist and mom Dr. Rhonda Farah, assistant professor in the Department of Dermatology at the University of Minnesota: "Yes, piercing is safe for babies." When it comes to good hypoallergenic back safe baby earrings, there are a few things to keep in mind.
allergy
The first point is that common metals from which earrings are made can causeallergic reaction. Nickel, for example, can cause allergic reactions. In fact, it is estimated10% of Americans are allergic to nickel, according to the Cleveland Clinic. But that's not the only metal of concern. Cobalt and chromium are also common culprits. If you know your child has an allergy to one of these metals or another commonly used in jewelry, or if you are concerned that this might be the case, buying hypoallergenic baby earrings is the best option.
"Hypoallergenic means that an attempt has been made to reduce the risk of skin reactions," Farah said. For example, this could mean minimizing the use of nickel or making it entirely nickel-free in a pair of earrings.
Having said that, Dr. Paul Bigliardi, assistant to Dr. People should be careful with the term "hypoallergenic," adds Farah, a professor and chief of the dermatology department in the Department of Skin Allergy at the University of Minnesota. "Hypoallergenic doesn't mean anything," she says. That's because while "the earrings may not be nickel-free, it won't prevent a reaction if the earrings are gold and someone is allergic to gold."
The good news is that "metal allergies in infants are very rare," Bigliardi said. "These allergies start later in life."
You will soon find out if your child is actually allergic to the metal used in the earrings. "The ears are often itchy, red and/or peeling," Farah explained. If this happens, remove the earrings immediately. "To preserve the hole, you can wear different earrings in different materials," he adds. However, it's important to remember that allergies are different from infections. "If the ear hurts or pus develops, it's not an allergic reaction, it's an infection, and it needs to be treated," Farah says. Another clue is whether the reaction only occurs in one ear. If this is the case, it is almost certainly not an allergic reaction.
If you want to avoid the guessing game you have to play when your child seems to be allergic to certain earrings, you have two options: only buy safe, hypoallergenic baby earrings and/or take your child to a dermatologist or a pediatrician. Dermatologist, and contact (skin-related) allergy testing before piercing. This helps to rule out potential irritants before being pierced.
