Puzzles as part of your consultation preparation

What kind of puzzles can I find during a case interview?

These teasers can blow your mind. After all, how are you supposed to determine the answers if you don't have hard data to work with? They may seem like non-beginners, but that's not the case. The answer is not as important as the approach you use, the assumptions you make, and how you test the final answer. There is much to teach here. The lack of definitive answers is exactly what makes them so valuable; There is no way to avoid them or find a suitable solution by sheer luck. The Math Riddle, Math Riddles, and Math Riddles:

Examples of math puzzles are probability questions. This is not suitable as a brain teaser as it tests your math skills against your critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Math puzzles can be intimidating, but they are usually relatively easy, even if they don't seem like it at first. As you dig deeper, you'll find some that require a wide range of equations, formulas, and calculations to arrive at their solution.

On the other hand, the simpler and less specialized ones tend to focus on probability.

Interestingly, math puzzles can be a bit hard to pin down, as they usually don't involve numbers, while other types of puzzles occasionally do. That can be a good thing, as it encourages you to approach the problem with an open mind, rather than assuming you have to stick to proven mathematical solving techniques.

Most people today associate math with subjects like computer science, but it's important to remember that it didn't start out that way. In essence, the mathematical system is designed to help us understand how the natural world works, not to overcomplicate it. When it comes to brain teasers, math is your friend!

Or riddles make riddles:

In this puzzle, the interviewer presents you with a concrete problem situation and asks you to find a solution.The brain teasers are the kind of brain teasers that require you to think outside the box. They usually use language that tries to trick you and often involves words and phrases that don't mean what they first seem. These tend to be the most difficult types of taunts, as they are the most aggressive in getting you out of your comfort zone. They can also be the most rewarding; There are few things more satisfying than finding a single, simple solution to a puzzle that initially seemed impossible.

An example that will appear below is the following: "If a plane crashes right on the border between the United States and Mexico, where are the survivors buried?" Another example is a question about a farmer, a fox, a carrot, and a rabbit below.

When solving a puzzle, the most important thing is that you can only identify it as a puzzle. "Why" puzzles are used to test your ability to analyze the world around you. They can be some of the hardest teasers to master, as many people often struggle to know where to start. They usually take a widely accepted quirk of the world around them and challenge you to find a reason for this to work the way it does. An example that appears later in this book is the following: "Why is a tennis ball out of focus?" This is a commonly used "why" riddle that emphasizes something that most people have never questioned.

Working with these types of teasers is a great way to think more critically about our environment, especially those created or designed by other people. We accept most modern conveniences for what they are and never think to question what made them that way, but nothing works a certain way "just because". Everything we use that is man-made is designed on purpose, and the more we can practice recognizing that fact, the more effectively we can solve our own problems, even when we are clueless, say, about the history of tennis.

Interview Questions That Aren't Riddles

Some interview questions may be difficult, but they may not be a mystery. These questions are usually about you rather than an external problem that you need to solve. Examples include:

These interview questions can be divided into two opposing areas: subjective and knowledge-based.

A subjective interview question usually does not have a correct answer, or at least an answer that depends on the person answering it. In a job interview, this might sound like your typical "What's your biggest weakness?" or "Do you see yourself more as a leader or a follower?" There are certainly right and wrong ways to answer a question like this, but most of the time you can be successful simply by being honest about your experience and skills. In other words, a subjective question will never try to trick you the way a puzzle usually does.

A knowledge-based job application question measures your competency in a specific area; often highly specialized. When an interview presents you with one of these, it's trying to gauge your familiarity with a topic that's likely to be central to the job you're applying for. You can think of these questions as the type you might find on a high school history test. As long as you have the facts straight, you should be able to easily answer knowledge-based questions without overthinking or problem solving.

Compared to these other types of questions, puzzles can be easier or harder depending on how you tend to solve problems. As a candidate, you will never again have to deal with a riddle, or study a bunch of facts beforehand. However, you can improve your overall puzzle-solving ability with practice. Think of the riddles as exercises for your mind. Your brain is a muscle like any other, and the more you use it, the stronger it gets. That's why this post is here: to give you an extra chance to practice and improve your puzzle solving. With that in mind, this is another element of riddles that sets them apart from many other types of interview questions: if you relax and take your time, they can be a lot of fun!

Advisory riddle with answers

Now let's look at some real mysteries. As you read each puzzle, try to solve it with calm, confidence, and a sense of urgency. Think about the problem and, as slowly as you can, think about how your brain needs to find the answer.

I remember when I was studying difficult subjects in college, when I tried to read fast I got lost. Instead, what I needed was to slow down and think carefully about all the connections the author made to explain a particular point. Taking the time to think through a problem in stages often produces much faster and better results than solving it quickly.

Members who rush through material, jumping from episode to episode, program to program, trying to find shortcuts and quickly reading material, do not perform as well as members who diligently work through programs in order. that we recommend, choosing several carefully and mastering concepts and approaches.

The same logic applies to solving puzzles. If you are in a hurry, you are likely to find the wrong answer.

For example, if we look again at a riddle we considered earlier, the one about socks. Some candidates may immediately panic: "Oh, it's probably statistics. I have to understand the probabilities. My God, I don't know how to figure this out!"

However, all you have to do is imagine that you are in a dark room, there are black and white socks in the drawer. You must get a matching pair. What are the possible scenarios? Well, you can get 2 socks, but there's no guarantee they'll match.

Let's say you have 3 socks, the next lowest number. What are the possible scenarios? Well, you can get 3 black socks, 3 white socks, 2 white socks and 1 black sock, or 2 black socks and 1 white sock. In all possible scenarios, you end up with a matching pair. You see, if you think about the problem calmly, if you let your brain process the information, the answer is simple and obvious. The key is to trust that you're smart and that you'll figure it out, and to let your brain work at a comfortable speed to figure it out.

Practice consulting riddles

How can you label all the boxes correctly?

Answers to the test riddles of medium difficulty.
