Anew modified version of Wahoo Kickr Bikenewly introduced with built-in Wi-Fi and slightly higher peak power; But because the original is now significantly less expensive and offers one of the best rides of any indoor trainer we've ridden when we reviewed it, Kickr Bike's V1 remains our top pick for smart bikes.

The adjustability is very impressive, allowing you to raise or lower the entire bike and adjust the reach of the handlebars and saddle. Wahoo takes this to the next level by inputting the numbers of a pro bike bit into the app, which tells you exactly where the adjustable sliders need to go. That feeling is also due to the resistance unit, which is a flywheel and motor combination that delivers up to 2200 watts of resistance.

The virtual gear real-time effective pitch changes are 20% with 15% dips with a performance accuracy of about 1%. As you would expect from the US manufacturer, the KickR bike integrates seamlessly with other Wahoo products and is compatible with all major training apps. Yes, it's not cheap, but it's great.

The scenarios gained traction as Team Sky used their crank-based power meter for several seasons in the Chris Froome era. Stopped at Stages. The range now includes commercial indoor bikes for gym-goers, cycle computers and, according to the SB20, smart indoor trainers.

This is a quality, well-built smart bike that delivers up to 2000 watts of electromagnetic resistance from a massive 23kg flywheel powered by a quiet and reliable Gates carbon belt. This is enough for the strongest cyclists. Unsurprisingly, the SB20 uses Stages' crank-based technology, which is accurate enough despite being powered by coin-cell batteries that need replacing after 100 hours. Keep this in mind or your Zwift ride will be terminated prematurely.

It easily syncs with your laptop, smartphone and tablet and is ANT+ and Bluetooth compatible. The real-world experience is very impressive, although the ERG mode is a minor disappointment. Gear changes are good. Cute touches like a phone tray and two water bottle holders on each side of the bike are appreciated.

Incredibly smooth and silent

large unit of resistance

Necessary

very well built

Fans are weak and somewhat flimsy.

Gear selector buttons are fiddly and not assignable

A little thigh rubbing on the seat post

This is a custom kit that accurately reflects your actual bike. You can swap out the 42cm bars if you like, while the cranks have interchangeable inserts for 170mm, 172.5mm or 175mm options. The pedals also have a Q-factor of 147mm, similar to many road cranks.

The first thing that strikes you is how incredibly quiet it is. It has a single speed gearbox which is basically silent except for a pretty cool hissing noise! The front of the bike has a dedicated screen, two fans, an iPad holder, a phone tray and two USB ports so you can charge your devices while you train.

Gear changes are quick, reliable and appreciated, while power delivery feedback is precise and reliable. It can handle sprints of up to 2200 watts, which should withstand the strain of the toughest track sprinters, and it can effortlessly simulate inclines of up to 25%.

Next generation Wattbike Atom

7

The best exercise bike or smart bike under £2,000

Buy it now from Wattbike for £1999

Much faster resistance changes

Easy to set up and adjust

precise power

no screen

Gear changes are not as smooth as on rivals

Gear features require third-party app development

The top-end Wattbike Atom is a much better indoor trainer than the first incarnation, making it a contender for your hard-earned money. The biggest change is swapping out the previous somewhat cumbersome mechanical resistance unit for an electromagnetic one. Yes, that means you need a power source nearby, but it makes stamina changes much faster and more reliable.

The Atom is accurate when it comes to power measurement, claiming a maximum resistance of 2500 watts and a 25% slope. It's great. There's no screen, which is a shame for the price, but there is built-in support for your smartphone or tablet. Here you can sync with one of the best indoor cycling apps like Zwift or use Wattbike's own app which is pretty good. It includes Wattbike's well-known shot analysis metric, where you can aim to stay on the green to dominate the no-soup soup.

The street feel is great too, making it a true contender for your indoor workouts this off-season.

Renpho AI smart bike

Cheapest home trainer or smart bike recommended by road.cc

Buy it now on Amazon for €599.99

Cheap for a smart bike

Solid

easy to set up

easy to connect

accuracy is bad

Riding is bad.

Included app is limited

Granted, the Renpho's AI isn't a panacea when it comes to smart bikes, but at a third the price of many of its more famous contemporaries, that's not surprising. There are good and bad, like life itself.

Arguably the most important feature of a smart bike is the power meter. Here Renpho was about 10% cheaper, which wasn't good for Zwift rides, if of course it wasn't reported; when we reported it, we were thrilled! – although Renpho stresses that it is 90% accurate. The pedal action doesn't quite match the smoothness of the more expensive models and feels a little clunky. On the other hand, ERG mode works perfectly.

It comes with its own built-in workout app, which is decent considering it's free. There are structured workouts, video spin lessons, and even some real-life video routes built into the app. Overall it's decent. The question will be whether you should opt for this or a better quality smart trainer. Ultimately, it may depend on whether you're a fitness fanatic looking to work out indoors or a dedicated cyclist. For you…

Cycle Z exercise bike

10

The cheapest "real" smart bike

Buy it now for £1499 from Powerhouse Fitness

very quiet

good resistance band

The gearbox is a little clumsy

Since Zycle took over Bkool's range of in-house workout hardware, they have not only continued to produce them, but have also updated the platforms, meaning the renamed and updated Zycle smart/exercise bike is up to the task.

In our review of the original Bkool modelWe weren't too impressed with the large Q-factor (the distance between the pedals), so you'll be happy to know it's reduced on the Zycle Z. There are two built-in buttons to make changing gears easy, and the handlebars offer multiple hand positions. Anyone between 160cm and 195cm can easily fit it with simple adjustments, the power accuracy is +/- 2% and there's even a USB port to charge your smartphone or tablet.

How to choose between the best exercise bikes and smart bikes

The Best Exercise Bikes and Smart Bikes of 2023: Adjustable, Feature-packed Trainers for Serious Indoor Training (14)

How much does an exercise bike or smart bike cost?

Our quality picks mean you'll do a little more research to buy a high-end exercise bike or smart bike and hit the four-figure mark for something top-notch. Sure, you'll see exercise bikes advertised for hundreds of prices, but they're unlikely to provide accurate real-world numbers to really improve your workout. If you don't care about dates and just want to spin some internal pedals for light exercise, a less expensive model might do the trick.

You may also have to pay extra for monthly Zwift subscriptions. But it's like any bike gear, whether it's your road bike or a bike accessory; If you use it and increase your fitness and help burn fat, it's money well spent!

How much space do I need for a smart bike?

There is no doubt that any exercise bike or smart bike will take up a lot of space. Thanks to technologies like the flywheel, they're also heavy. When it comes to a home trainer or home trainer that folds neatly and stores, they can't compete in space.

Most are quite manoeuvrable, however, as they have wheels at their base that operate when you lightly lift the Smart Bike. However, if you are buying a smart bike, make sure there is a dedicated space for it. You'll also need a power source, so place your smart bike near an outlet.

How do I check my driving performance?

Where do we start? Unlike your basic indoor bike at your local fitness center, the best exercise bikes and smart bikes have a variety of technologies to help track and hopefully improve your fitness. Power meters come standard with an accuracy that varies between models. In addition to power, you can track cadence, pedaling time and heart rate, all designed to boost your cycling performance.

They sync with your own app and third-party apps like Zwift, TrainerRoad and RGT Cycling. This provides extra motivation when you drive real circuits and compete against drivers from all over the world. There's nothing like competition to help you dig a little deeper.

Also an interesting feature in most interior applicationsVery chicwhere your trainer automatically sets the resistance for you. So if you climb Alpe d'Huez with Zwift and want to maintain, say, 250 watts, it will automatically adjust the resistance to your cadence. Now you can focus on cadence and set training zones. You can of course turn this feature off and control the gear changes. Whatever works best for you on a given day.

Can you tell me more about strength training?

The key to strength training is understanding yourfunctional performance threshold(ftp). This is the maximum power, expressed in watts and watts per kilogram of body weight, that you can sustain for one hour. Most smart bike apps and third party apps like Zwift have an FTP feature that allows you to calculate your zones and run tests to find out your FTP value.

To find out, you can push yourself as hard as you can for an hour and divide the number in watts by your weight; However, a more popular and efficient way to get a number is a 20-minute test that involves a series of warm-up exercises and pushing yourself as hard as you can for 20 minutes. To get the number you could hold for an hour, take 95% watts output for 20 minutes. For example, if you output 200 watts for 20 minutes, then (theoretically) the number you can sustain for an hour is 190 watts. To calculate how many watts you expend per kilogram of body weight, you must divide 190 by your weight in pounds.

Once you know your FTP, you can ride at different training intensities to stimulate specific physiological adaptations. Coaches Hunter Allen and Andrew Coggan developed this seven-zone training method to get the most out of your cycling...

What other equipment do I need to get the most out of my exercise bike or smart bike?

You don't like the cold air of an outdoor walk indoors, so a fan is a must. However, many smart bikes now have a built-in fan or fans that actually change their thrust depending on how hard you're working them.

It might sound a little pornographic, but it's also worth tucking a fan next to your shorts to add some southerly cooling and reduce the chance of chafing. Also, have bottled water and a towel, energy gels for longer walks, and maybe headphones so you don't disturb your roommates or family.
